More coats needed for Schley County

Fall is already here and winter is approaching fast. We need more coats to complete our coat drive. Due to the economy, the demand for coats has increased this year. Currently we have over 150 low-income children who have signed up for coats.

We need coats, blankets, gloves, scarves and knit caps. We will also accept monetary donations to purchase coats.

An additional 80 coats are needed to meet this year’s need.

You can drop off coats [all sizes] from infant to large, X-Large and 2xlarge sizes for high school students, at the collection site, Schley Department of Family and Children Services office here in Ellaville.

Our goal is to distribute the coats to children in Schley County by the end of October.

If you are planning a yard sale, please donate your coats, blankets, gloves and scarves to us.

If you have any questions or need more information call John Greene 937-2591 or 591-2323. Thank you.

Memories, decorations for fall

As I was sitting and remembering the other day, I remembered when my Daddy had returned from World War II, and it was about the middle of October. My Mother and Daddy took me to get a pumpkin for Halloween. Daddy carved a Jack-o-lantern, put a candle inside and placed it inside the fireplace. As a 4-year-old, I thought that it was the prettiest pumpkin I had ever seen.

This brought thoughts about how Nature's pallet can bring such brilliant colors for fall, and how we all can decorate our homes. There are so many ways to decorate with these brilliant glowing leaves, flowers and  more.

About two years ago for Thanksgiving, I got Perry's Produce to get me eight small pumpkins. I cut a small hole in the top and carved out about 2 inches wide and deep and placed a tea candle inside and placed them at each plate setting for Thanksgiving Day.

These small pumpkins were my candle holders. My table cloth was green with a ceramic scare crow that I had made as a center piece, and the candles all bright just brought out the table.

One year I got a pumpkin about the size of a salad plate in width and I poked holes outside of the pumpkin with a tool that Bobby had and cut bronze mums and placed them in the holes. The entire pumpkin was covered with bronze mums and the stem of the pumpkin showed, and you would think that I had a flower pumpkin. It was a real pretty arrangement for our party.

Get some leaves of brilliant colors and stems: mums, blazing red Pyracantha berries, and make yourself a lovely centerpiece by getting a medium size pumpkin of white and green (pumpkins come in different colors), and cut out the inside, and place a piece of soaked oasis inside of the pumpkin; then make your arrangement inside the pumpkin. Make sure that you have some leaves or berries falling over the side of the pumpkin.

Correction

I made a mistake in last weeks article about Caylee Hammack. I put that she attended the Schley County High School and she is a senior at Southland Academy in Americus.
