Community saddened at death of Averett Phillips
Our town is so sad of the death of Averett Phillips.
Averett was always a very kind man and always had a kind word for everyone.
Oh, how he loved his family. His loving wife Brenda was always by his side, as well as he was always beside hers.
Averett and Brenda would have been married 50 years this year. Averett and Brenda had two sons, Greg and Glen and his wife Heather. Averett had four grandchildren and oh, how he loved them.
He had two sisters and two brothers.
Averett was a man that loved children and young people. He was really close to a lot of other children, even to young men and women that he had known since they were born, and others.
He was a devoted Methodist. He and Brenda raised their children in the Ellaville United Methodist Church. He and Brenda were in church all the time and he took part in the church in any way he could or as needed.
Yes, Averett will always be here with his family and friends through his love and care for others. We as a whole here in Ellaville will always remember what a lovely person Averett was.

Have you noticed Memorial Mile?
Have you noticed lately the lovely Memorial Mile between Ellaville and Americus?
As most people know Memorial Mile was on the old U.S. Highway 19 South with the lovely magnolia trees and markers placed in memory of the Sumter County veterans that died during World War I.
When the state moved Highway 19 over, you could not see the Memorial Mile from the new highway.
The Garden Clubs of Sumter County and Rebecca McNeill have gotten the brush cut and have fixed up Memorial Mile so others can see this special mile from the new highway.
I have heard that the Sumter County Board of Commissioners helped clean up this special Mile. This old Highway 19 is now a County road.
I can remember as a child going to Atlanta from Americus and what an impression I got from the memorial markers and name plates on them and the magnolia tree. I must have been four years old when my Daddy stopped one day and explained to me about the markers and gold name plates that were placed on them. I never ride going or coming from Americus that I don't think of this special mile.
Now our flag flies so proudly on the north end of the Mile, and this really makes the Memorial Mile a special place when you see Old Glory flying.
Let me thank the Garden Clubs of Sumter County, Rebecca McNeill and the Sumter County Board of Commissioners and anyone else who helped make this a special place in Sumter County. Thank you for helping keep this special part of Sumter County's history up and not letting it just go by the wayside.
Remembering a special man
Let's remember a special man: John Blake Benefield Jr.
Blake, as he was called, was the son of the late John Blake Benefield Sr. (everyone called him Buddy) and the late Alice Dillard Benefield.
Blake is survived by his wife Hilda J. Benefield of Ellaville and four daughters and one son, and two stepdaughters.
Blake was a very kind and loving person from a boy until his death. He would do anything for anyone.
Blake had been a member of the Ellaville United Methodist Church since he was a boy.
He was a man who always loved God and was always willing to share his love of God with anyone.
Blake loved to fish; oh, how he loved fishing.
Blake had been sick a while, but you never heard him complain. His idea was “tomorrow will be better;” that was the way Blake thought
He loved his family.
Have you ever heard the expression "Love Comes On Angels Wings?” Well, this was Blake. He loved his friends and his friends loved Blake.
It was told by a preacher, that when he visited Blake the day before he died, that Blake told him, “This is the best day of my life.”
Yes Blake, your family and our community will always remember you as being so kind to everyone and loving everyone.
