ELLAVILLE — I'm sure that all of you here in Ellaville /Schley County remember the large Thanksgiving dinner that was held for those without a home or for those that did not have a place to go for Thanksgiving Day dinner last year. Well we are planning on having this special Thanksgiving meal again.
First let us say that if we had not had all of your help by donating food we could not have ever fed the people we had last year. So we are asking you again to help us out by donating dishes of food, cakes, beverages and much more so we can feed these people a community dinner. We also need volunteers to help serve the food and feed the people on this day.
This will be held again from noon-2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day in the Ellaville City Center.
If you are planning on helping us out please let Neil Snyder or The Pizza Place know by Nov. 17 so we can make special preparations for this Thanksgiving meal.
We also want the people to sign up for this special meal at the Ellaville City Center (Senior Citizens Center) that will be attending this meal. Deadline date is Nov. 17.
The Bible says to share what we have with others that are in need.
This meal is for anyone who doesn't have a place to go on Thanksgiving Day and are in need. You may eat at the center or carry it out if you wish. If you are disabled, we will be glad to deliver your meal to you; just let us know by signing up.
Ellaville-Schley County's people are the best when a special time of need arrives, and you always help us pull together where we can have a successful event.
We will make more announcements later on about this special dinner.
Please sign up at the Ellaville City Center (Senior Citizens Center). Deadline is Nov. 17.
For more information call Neil Snyder at 942-4968 or The Pizza Place at 937- 2123.
The lady of all arts scores
Ashli Solinger entered 10 pieces of art in the Georgia National Fair and scored high in the Ceramic Division in which she entered five pieces. She won First Place, two Second Places and two Third Places. She entered two bowls: a speckled one and a brown one. She had two fish and a beehive with a bee on it. She painted a piece in decorative tole painting in acrylic.
Ashli entered a basket and received Second Place.
Her next item was in the Jewelry Division. Her beaded hair bow received Third Place. Her painted box with a handle on top, like a lady's pocket book, received Fifth Place. She also entered a hat in the Knitting/Textiles Divisions, and entered a photograph in the that division but did not place. Winning eight out of 10 is just great if you ask me.
Ashli teaches art for the Lee County School System. She is talented in so many ways. We all here want to congratulate Ashli for doing so well, and we all appreciate you for representing us as well at the fair in Perry this year. We're proud of you.
2009 Homecoming Queen, Court
A special congratulations goes out to our Schley County High School Homecoming Queen, Emily Gordy, who was crowned on Oct. 2 during half-time of the Schley County Homecoming football game by our new Schley County superintendent, Larry Stubbs. Emily was all smiles as she was named queen, and crowned.
The girls on the Homecoming Court were driven to the visitors’ side of the field in convertibles, two representatives per car. All of their fathers helped them out of their cars and escorted them onto the field where the queen was announced, and crowned. These young ladies were representatives of the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades.
Representing the 9th grade were Callie Timmerman and Hannah Conger. Representing the 10th grade were Kayla Womack and Lyndsey Metheny. Representing the 11th grade were Brittany Nagel and Hannah Bray. The four representing the 12th grade were Anne Marie McFather. Gloria Harden, Mallory Wall and Emily Gordy. All of these lovely ladies were dressed in beautiful gowns of all different colors. Each representative on the court received a long stemmed white rose. The queen was presented a lovely bouquet of long stemmed red roses, her crown and sash.
Again, congratulations go out to the queen and her court.
Georgia National Fair
Shelbi Patterson entered a photography in the photography division. This young lady did not place, but she put her picture in and it was so nicely done. She is the daughter of Dan Patterson.
I was told that there were a lot of entries in this category. The person that told me said that they would hate to be a judge in this division because there were so many amazing pictures.
Congratulations Shelbi; try again next year and you will win. Don't give up. Thank you for entering your art.
Rides and wins
Carli Solinger recently participated in the Autumn Classic Charity Horse Show in Albany. This special event was a benefit for the humane society.
Carli rode her horse Scratch Bailey in six jumping events and placed in four of them. She won three Second Place ribbons and one Third Place ribbon.
Carli is doing well now riding her horse Scratch Bailey. Congratulations Carli.
Athon reunion
Kelma and Linda Lashley of Taylor County hosted a large Athon cousin reunion Oct. 10 2009 at their lovely home. Those attending the reunion were the descendants of Cincy D. and Estella Justice Athon.
The Athons were married Dec. 12,1900, and were long-time residents of Macon County with their farm being located just off Ga. Highway 26, east of Ellaville near Corinth United Methodist Church in Schley County, where they raised six children.
Their children are all deceased now, were Ophelia Ellis (Rufus Ellis), who were the parents of Marcene Ellis of Ellaville; Tressie (Esau Lashley) who were the parents of Wayne, Lavern, Jeanne, Kelma and Louis Lashley; Marvin (Ruby Childs), whose children were Lullene and Lowell Athon; Millard (Mary Athon), whose children are Jean and Kenneth Athon; Una (Hillard Dennard), who has one son Mickey; and Carolyn Athon (Ben Snipes), whose sons are Ben and Earl.
Seven of the eight surviving grandchildren attended: Lavern Lashley Card, Kelma and Louise Lashley, Jean Athon Stripling, Kenneth Athon and Ben and Earl Snipes. Jeanne Lashley Eubanks was unable to attend.
The deceased grand children are Marcene Ellis, Wayne Lashley, Lullene Athon Bicklesy and Lowell Athon.
The widows that attended were Hazel Rigsby Ellis (Marcene Ellis) and Shirley Clark Lashley (Wayne Lashley).
Before lunch was served Kelma Lashley welcomed everyone and asked the blessing. A covered dish meal was served. There were tables placed throughout the lovely home. Certain ones wanted to watch the Georgia football game, so some TV trays were set up.
The lovely home was decorated with fall colors and guests sat on the wraparound porch that circles the home with hanging baskets of mandevillas and winter boxes filled with pansies for the spring.
After the covered dish luncheon was served, the family shared memories and old photos of the past. Ophelia Ellis’ scrapbook was truly enjoyed. She could always tell you history, where you just sat with your mouth open just listening to her share different things.
Each and everyone of the Athon cousins truly enjoyed being with each other, and this is what makes life so sweet.
There were 60 family and two guests. What a great day for the Athon family.
