Nancy M. Young: Dec. 1, 2009

The Watson Christmas tree farm started selling their Christmas trees on Thanksgiving afternoon.

They have a large variety of trees to choose from. They have imported Fraser Firs transported from up north. They grow Leyland Cypress, Murray X (form of a Cypress), Virginia Pines, Carolina Sapphire, Blue Ice and Red Cedar. They have fresh wreaths, large ones or small ones.

The Watsons’ offer tours and wagon rides, where you can select your favorite tree. They also have someone to help you load and put on your stands if needed. Many people bring their stands back each year where they can drill a hole in the tree and it is placed in your favorite tree stand if you wish.

Tours are available for groups of school children. When school children come as a group guess, who will be there? You guessed it, Santa Claus. So teachers, call Eddie or Sharon and set up a tour for your classes.

Hours will be from noon until dark, Sunday-Friday, and 9 a.m.-dark Saturday. They are on Ga. Highway 26 West of Ellaville on the left side of the road.

Come on out and take a ride in the wagon.

For more information call Eddie or Sharon Watson at 937-5732.

Ellaville-Schley County Boy Scouts

We are so proud to announce that Douglas Jameson has accepted the position of Scout Master here in Ellaville and Schley County.

Douglas told me that they had their first meeting at 7 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Scout House. The Scout House is the large yellow house between the Central Bank and Ellaville United Methodist Church. This is a real nice place to have Scout meetings.

He has also started the Cub Scouts as well as the Webeloes. He's trained 12 leaders for the Cub Scouts. They have 18 Cub Scouts that have joined and six Boy Scouts.

Douglas is in the process of training a Boy Scout assistant now. The Webeloes will meet with the Boy Scouts to start off with.

The Cub Masters are Duane Montgomery Jr. and Roger Bivins. These men will be real good Cub Masters and will do a real good job.

Douglas has started off with a bang. These boys will be in the Ellaville Christmas Parade on a float at 6 p.m. tonight. Plus he's taking the Boy Scouts to "Camping On Ice” on Dec. 12. These boys will be going to Columbus to a hockey game and when it’s over they will spend the night on the ice and they will receive a Polar Bear Badge.

Douglas , has really started off with such great events and ideas. This will make a lot more boys want to join the Boy Scouts.

The Methodist Men of Ellaville and Schley County sponsor the Boy Scouts, and have for years.

Any boy that is interested can join this fine group of Scouts. There are strict rules and regulations that everyone must follow, but a lot of learning and fun as well.

So parents, if you’re interested in your sons becoming a Boy Scout, be sure and contact Douglas Jameson for more information at 815-5032 (cell phone).

Thank you Douglas as well as all of the other men that will be working with you and the Cubs, Webeloes and Boy Scouts. Good luck to all of you.

Christmas Parade tonight

The City of Ellaville is sponsoring the annual Christmas Parade at 6 p.m. today. This is a reminder to all who did not see this last week in the Times-Recorder. When the parade is over you can carry your children to the park to see Santa Claus, if the weather is bad he will be in the Ellaville City Center.

The U.S. Marine Corps Band from Albany will be here as well. You can hear them in the after the parade as well.

Schley County’s new 4-H assistant

Schley County is proud to welcome Beth Bird as our new 4-H program assistant. Beth started her work here on Nov. 3 and she will be here in the Schley County agent’s office from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays (closed for lunch from noon-1 p.m.).

She will be working with 4-H’ers through the schools from grades 5-7. Students from grades 8-12 will meet with her at the Schley County agent’s office downtown, beside the Old Gym.

She's very excited about getting our 4-H groups started back once again, and getting the students interested in this special 4-H Club. Beth’s plans are to organize special projects for the 4-H’ers and have special programs planned for these students.

If you are interested in volunteering some of your time. Beth said she would need some help for her special events that she plans to do for these students.

If any student would like to join, you can contact Beth Bird at the Schley County agent’s office or call 937-2601. Contact your school as well.

Beth will be making her home in Americus.

Celebrating anniversary

Today, Bobby and Nancy Young are celebrating their 48th wedding anniversary. It doesn't seem that long, and what great years we've had together with ourselves and friends and family that have helped us share our love for one another.

It's a blessing to have others in our lives to help us share our time together, that God has put two people together, and has made us one. We are planning to go out for a special dinner.

Power Alley opens

The new business downtown, called The Power Alley 24-7, opened Nov. 7 in the old Tondee's grocery store downtown. When they held their grand opening and ribbon cutting, there were a lot of people on hand for this special occasion.

Scotty Layfield is owner of this business with his sister Elizabeth Layfield as manager, and Mallory Wall as a employee.

They have a large variety of fitness equipment available for everyone. They offer special discounts for students, military, law enforcement, EMTs, firefighters, local businesses and groups of 10 or more.

They charge month by month or every three months with no enrollment fee. You can also receive free fitness training. You will have free access to the Power Alley 24-7. You will need to speak with Elizabeth or Scotty Layfield. You will be given a key to have access to the Power Alley and equipment. They also have cable TV for you to watch while exercising.

There are two different sides: one for the women and one for the men.

This is offering something really special to the community and the community will enjoy this, and it will help you have better health as you exercise.

Good luck to The Power Alley and to all of you that will participate in this exercise gym.
