AMERICUS —
Feb. 6-10 was designated “Pride in Food Service Week” by the Association of Nutrition & Foodservice Professionals®. The week applauds dietary managers and other members of the foodservice team for their hard work and dedication on the job.
The Association of Nutrition & Foodservice Professionals® (ANFP) is an organization of 13,000 members dedicated to excellence in the foodservice industry. ANFP® members work in hospitals, long-term care centers, schools, correctional facilities and other non-commercial settings. There are 150 dietary managers in Georgia. Larry Jackson, CDM®, CFPP®, who works at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, has been a member of the Association of Nutrition & Foodservice Professionals® since 2007. He is currently serving as the president of Georgia ANFP.
Seventy percent of dietary managers have earned the Certified Dietary Manager, Certified Food Protection Professional (CDM®, CFPP®) credential. These individuals have completed an approved training program, 150 hours of supervisory experience, and successfully passed a credentialing exam. Once Certified Dietary Managers have earned the CDM®, CFPP® credential, they must maintain this certification through 45 hours of continuing education hours every three years. In Georgia, 200 of Association of Nutrition & Foodservice Professionals® members are certified.
Dietary managers are trained in understanding the basic nutritional needs of their clientele, and are responsible for purchasing, storing, preparing and delivering balanced meals, three times a day, 365 days a year.
Pride in Food Service Week is celebrated in various educational and entertaining ways — from cholesterol testing and special menus — to poster contests in schools, spotlighting foodservice workers on bulletin boards and dietary trivia contests. It proudly salutes foodservice departments in community facilities for their professional efforts and vital services given throughout the year.
At Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, menu items for the week in the new cafeteria were named for each member of the nutrition department staff, as in Larry’s Corn Dogs. To top things off, on the last day, the management staff of the department gave them a surprise ice cream social and a appreciation gift.
More information about the CDM®, CFPP® credential is available on the ANFP website at http://www.ANFPonline.org.
