Identity of young woman in mystery photo sought

AMERICUS — A nice woman from Pine Mountain, Penny Sprague, recently contacted the Americus Times-Recorder about finding a way to determine the identity of a pretty, young woman in a very old photo.

Sprague said she had visited Americus recently as part of researching her ancestors: Willis Alston Hawkins and Eugene Alston Hawkins.

Sprague said her visit took her to several places in Americus, among them the home of her grandmother, Lucia Lamar Hawkins (Mrs. Clarence White), who was the daughter of Eugene Alston and Mary McClesky Hawkins. She was one of 11 children, four being girls. Her sisters were Mary Bird Hawkins Sheffield, Helen Newton Hawkins and Georgia Lee Hawkins Killen.

Sprague told the newspaper that Eugene Alston Hawkins had a second wife, Willie Rutherford. The home was completed in 1890, and is on the National Historic Register. The house is located at 406 Church St. in Americus. It is next door to the Lee Council House, which is headquarters of the Sumter Historic Trust.

Sprague told the newspaper that the home’s current owners, Gary and Juliane Williams, have restored the home and graciously gave her a tour of the house her grandmother had grown up it. Upon her departure, Juliane Williams gave Sprague a photograph of “a lovely young lady that they recovered from behind a brick fireplace during restoration.”

Sprague says the photo was taken by Whisnant Studios of Americus and possibly dates to the late 1800s or early 1900s.

Sprague is asking anyone who recognizes the person in the photo to please contact her at 706-663-7600.

Hopefully the mystery will be solved with this exposure.
