Sports coverage explained
AMERICUS —
Last week we received complaints about the sports section and its coverage.
We’re here to set the record straight and to answer any questions you may have.
The Americus Times-Recorder’s coverage area includes Sumter, Schley, Macon, Marion and Webster counties. The main emphasis is on the newspaper’s readership, which includes Americus-Sumter, Southland Academy, Schley County, Georgia Southwestern State University and South Georgia Technical College.
The coverage area does include high schools outside Sumter County — Schley, Macon and Marion counties.
So, those unhappy must understand that the Times-Recorder is not biased in its coverage. One local football game will be chosen each week to attend while the effort is made to be sure everyone has an equal amount of game coverage between Americus-Sumter, Southland and Schley County.
Players of the Week go to the best player who had the best game, based on statistics and opponent. No one will receive the honor more than once.
While the newspaper is located in Americus, it also covers events outside Americus. The newspapers in Albany, Cordele, Macon, Thomasville and Valdosta — to name a few — do not cover only schools located in their respective city, and they also are not biased toward schools or players.
We will continue to cover events as we have in the past. Decisions will be based on all five high schools with the most emphasis being on Americus-Sumter, Southland and Schley County.
