AMERICUS —
Sanford Bishop, Democrat
U.S. Congress, 2nd District
Incumbent serving 10th term, 20th year in office. Served 14 years in State House, two years in State Senate.
What is the top issue in the 2nd Congressional District? “Jobs and the economy. We’ve got to make sure the 2nd District continues to recover from the recession. I will continue to use the political process to strengthen jobs, keep the environment clean and safe, build a strong defense and provide affordable healthcare. We need to keep our fiscal house in order, invest in the future and infrastructure. We also need to make sure there’s adequate education and training that gives our workers skills so the district can compete in the global marketplace.”
Why are you seeking re-election? “I’ve gained a level of seniority that I can leverage the political process ... I believe that government should create an atmosphere where individuals and communities can realize their full potential. I believe I have the tools and skills to utilize in the political process to secure resources for the people of our area, state and nation. It’s for me, essentially, a ministry of public service.”
Since you’ve announced your candidacy for re-election, have people commented on what they want to see done? “People have said keep doing what your doing in representing us. You’re working hard for us.”
Affiliations: Eagle Scout, Shriners, 33rd Degree Mason, Lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, ordained deacon and trustee of the Mount Zion Baptist Church, Albany.
John House, Republican
U.S. Congress, 2nd District
Occupation: Teaches part-time for two universities, online, possesses four master’s degrees and a doctoral in business, specializing in public administration, retired Army colonel and former defense contractor.
What is the top issue in the 2nd Congressional District? “The top issue is jobs. As I’ve traveled around the district, 23,000 miles outside of Muscogee County, there are a lot of people that need work. Too many need to care for their families and need a way to do that.”
Why are you seeking election? “Congressman Bishop has been there 20 years. I’m not happy with what’s going on in Washington with jobs and the economy; the deficit is out of control and so are regulations. (Bishop) can’t stop it or is participating in creating this system.”
Since you’ve announced your candidacy have people commented on what they want to see done? “Three things. They want jobs. They’re worried about the deficit. Businessmen, farmers, politicians all say regulations are preventing them from doing their jobs. Regulations are stifling instead of improving life. I’m constantly hearing that complaint.”
