City officials attend power meeting

ELLAVILLE — Mayor David Theiss, Councilman Desse Powers, Councilman Charles Sherwood and City Administrator Debby Pilcher recently represented the City of Ellaville at the well-attended gathering of community officials at the Annual Meeting of the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia (MEAG Power). MEAG Power, a non-profit public power entity, provides the wholesale electric power which is distributed locally to the City of Ellaville residents and businesses.

The meeting included presentations by national speakers, local professionals and MEAG Power senior executives. The program covered energy industry forecasts as well as election year insights — both concerns that could directly affect the electric rate-payers in Ellaville. Additionally, attendees were updated on the construction and financing of the expansion at nuclear Plant Vogtle.

Roland Stubbs, chairman of the MEAG Power board of directors and an active businessman from Sylvania, along with Robert Johnston, president and CEO of MEAG Power, opened the meeting on an optimistic note. MEAG Power has a long history of providing reliable and economical wholesale electric power to its 49 participant communities, including the City of Ellaville. Moreover, the organization already generates 54 percent of its energy from emission-free resources.

This year’s annual meeting had representation from a record number of the 49 local Georgia communities MEAG Power serves. Those at the meeting numbered over 220 and included Georgia community mayors, city council members, city managers and others involved in their community’s utility activities. Also in attendance were individuals involved in the municipal bond community.

“Staying abreast of the initiatives that impact the future of Ellaville’s local power is critical,” said Theiss. “It is important to have up-to-date industry information and awareness of the challenges we might face if new legislative or regulatory changes are enacted. The issues that were addressed and the reports that were given will help us make informed decisions as we plan ahead for the City of Ellaville.”
