AMERICUS —
A 16-year-old male remains in custody after a lengthy chase as the investigation continues into a rash of burglaries in Americus.
Americus Police Chief Mark Gerbino said that at 8:30 a.m. Friday, officers on routine patrol noticed an unoccupied vehicle which they recognized as possibly stolen. They also noticed property sitting inside the car. They watched the 1998 Lexus 400 until a male got behind the wheel and drove away.
Gerbino said the officers followed the Lexus around Americus until it reached the City limits, when the driver “kicked in and took off.”
The chase, which Gerbino said lasted a good half-hour, went into Macon County and through Montezuma and Oglethorpe and into Crisp County. The police chief said that the driver lost control of the car near the Crisp County Airport where he crashed it. He bailed and ran on foot. He was caught, handcuffed and brought into custody.
Other agencies involved in the chase, Gerbino said, included the Georgia State Patrol and deputies from the sheriff’s offices in Sumter, Dooly and Crisp counties.
Gerbino said the 16-year-old is charged with numerous traffic violations and possession of stolen property. He said the investigation is ongoing and more arrests are expected.
The chief said some of the recovered property from the Lexus is tied to a recent burglary in which a firearm was stolen.
“Auto theft in this city,” Gerbino said, “is almost always related to other crimes. This is a perfect example.”
