AMERICUS —
An inmate collapsed while playing basketball at the Sumter County Correctional Institute (CI) Monday afternoon and died later at a local hospital.
CI Warden Jimmy Colson told the Times-Recorder that inmate Jerrard Roseberry, 48, of the Atlanta area collapsed right after starting the second basketball game during yard call at 2:20 p.m. He said CPR was administered and an ambulance was called.
Colson said resuscitation efforts continued at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, but Roseberry was pronounced dead at 3:08 p.m.
The warden said the Sumter County Coroner’s Office ordered an autopsy and the body was sent to the State Crime Lab for that purpose. He also said the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office was asked to investigate the death.
Colson said the autopsy had been conducted Wednesday but he had no idea when the findings would be released.
Sumter County Coroner Greg Hancock, when contacted late Wednesday afternoon, said the autopsy report is pending toxicology screening.
