MONTEZUMA —
On Tuesday afternoon, officers of the Montezuma Police Department stopped a vehicle for violating the City’s loud music ordinance. Upon the officers making contact with the driver, identified as Curtis James Holmes Jr., 32, of 410 Hinton St., Fort Valley, Holmes could not produce a valid driver’s license. A check through the E-911 Center revealed that Holmes’ license was suspended for third offense for driving on a suspended license. Officers further noticed that Holmes seemed very nervous and Officer Christopher Halstead noticed a bag within the vehicle containing suspected marijuana.
Holmes was placed under arrest and while being searched, K-9 Officer Rodney Flynt located suspected cocaine which was individual wrapped and ready to be sold. Flynt also found a large sum of cash in Holmes’ pocket. The police officer noticed that the money was new and that all the bills of the same denominations contained the same serial numbers.
Montezuma Police Chief Eric Finch stated, “I am proud of what Officers Flynt and Halstead have done today. They stopped this money from entering into our businesses which would have been a burden on them during these tough times.”
The officers were able to seize 58 counterfeit bills in the denominations of 100, 50, 20 and 10.
Finch further stated, “We had been receiving information about Mr. Holmes selling drugs within our community and we had been watching him and his friends and furthermore building up intelligence on them. However, with all this counterfeit money, this caught us by surprise and we are now working on the angle of linking the money back to the Atlanta area.”
Finch said that if anyone has come in contact with any counterfeit money containing the following serial numbers, they should contact their local law enforcement agency. The serial numbers are listed as follows: $100 bills — serial number DB32986A; $50 bills — serial numbers IB26108389B and IF27374447A; $20 bills — serial numbers EL47876914G, IL52777948F, IK57285688B and IF34719950G, and $10 bills — serial number JAO5480924A.
Holmes was transported to the Macon County Jail. While being searched at the jail, an ounce of suspected marijuana was found in Holmes’ private area, according to police.
Holmes is charged with 58 counts of forgery in the first degree, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, crossing of guard lines with drugs without the consent of the warden, driving while license is suspended or revoked (third offense) loud music, possession of drug related object, parole violation and probation violation.
The Montezuma Police Department is also looking at seizing a 2005 Cadillac CTS.
