Ravishing Raiders

22nd Miss SAR to be crowned Saturday

From Staff Reports

AMERICUS — On Saturday, Southland Academy will crown the 22nd Miss Southland Academy Raider, better known as Miss SAR. Since 1989, the Miss SAR Pageant has generated income for the Thomas Greene Scholarship Fund. This year’s event is hosted by Southland’s PTO and for the first time, the Miss SAR pageant becomes the catalyst for increasing awareness and funding for Southland’s overall scholarship program and tuition assistance for the Thomas Greene and Madeline Wildes Scholarship Funds.

The Miss SAR Scholarship pageant is more than a contest for young women — the funds raised through the competition provide income for the scholarships that benefit well-deserving students at the school. The Thomas Greene Scholarship Fund assists families that have incurred an unexpected financial situation and without the assistance, might be forced to withdraw from Southland Academy. The Madeline Wildes Scholarship serves a different purpose — it allows the school to reach out to young students who might not have the means to attend Southland Academy. This scholarship can assist a recipient of the Thomas Greene or the GOAL scholarships. The GOAL scholarship program allows students who have attended a public school to choose to attend Southland. The scholarship is awarded through a state-approved organization to families who have limited income, but want their children to receive an education at Southland Academy. All scholarships are awarded based on need.

The 2010 Miss SAR contestants are sponsored by campus school organizations and include Caylee Hammack, a member of Southland’s Young People’s Christian Organization, Alex Lindsey, a member of Southland’s Key Club, Meghan Welch, a member of Southland’s student government, Ashleigh Crook, a member of Southland’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Tanzy Hogsed, a member of Southland’s Senior Beta Club, Brooklyn Looney, a member of Southland’s Science Club, Kayla Phillips, a member of Southland’s Students Against Destructive Decisions, Brittany Daniel, a member of Southland’s Civinettes, Betty Morgan Davis, a member of Southland’s Garden Club and Bentley Dupree, a member of Southland’s Foreign Language Club. The organizations have chosen their candidates based their exemplary academic successes and their ability to represent Southland Academy. The clubs are promoted by the contestants in preparation for the pageant, as well as during the pageant. Each club supports their contestant through monetary contributions focused toward scholarship emphasis. Each contestant chooses a charitable organization similar to the Miss America system’s platforms. The winner of the pageant has the opportunity to present her charity a contribution provided by Southland’s Junior Beta Club. Each contestant volunteered time in the Southland Raider Club’s Sweetheart Pageant held for younger girls at the school. Although each Miss SAR contestant is vying for the title and crown, the real emphasis of the pageant is the means it provides and the skills in leadership and community service that the pageant instills.

The Miss SAR Pageant is a tradition for all Southland Academy students directly involved and for those in support of such a worthwhile endeavor. Southland extends the invitation for the community to join the contestants at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Melvin T. Kinslow Gymnatorium for an evening of excitement, pageantry and competition for a good cause.

Tickets are available at Southland Academy for $8 in advance and $10 at the door for the evening pageant. If you desire to make a contribution to the Miss SAR Pageant, information can be provided to you by calling the school. GOAL Scholarship information is available through the business and development offices. Every contribution is greatly appreciated with tax-deductible incentives available with each scholarship contribution.
