City Council discusses Sunday alcohol sales
AMERICUS — The Americus Mayor and City Council met Monday in the third-floor meeting room in the Municipal Building for an administrative briefing. City Administrative Charlotte Cotton presented the Mayor and Council with information related to Sunday alcohol sales requirements.
Cotton presented to the Council Georgia’s current ordinance on Sunday alcohol which requires the establishment to make at least 50 percent of sales from food. The current City ordinance requires establishments to garner 40 percent of business from food in order to sell alcoholic beverages, but does not allow for Sunday alcohol sales. Cotton said that she would take the issue to Council next month and move the discussion forward.
On Monday an operating report review for December 2009, and the year was provided for the Council. Such reports are e-mailed to Council members, but Cotton felt it pertinent to provide highlights from the report. The report showed some financial elements affected by the current economic downswing. The local option sales tax was down 10 percent at the end of December. City Transit reported that 8,500 less trips were made than compared to the previous year. And it was also reported that there were only four residential building permits issued in 2009, and only two commercial permits.
The report also indicated that crime, namely burglary, had jumped from 2009. The Americus Police Department reported 413 burglary incidents in 2009 compared to 211 in 2008; a 96 percent increase.
Other topics of discussion Monday’s administrative briefing included:
• The Mayor and Council were briefed on the Heart and Soul Tour coming through Americus. The Georgia Cities sponsored event will bring a group of developers to Americus for a walking tour of downtown on April 14.
• The Council passed a motion for Mayor Barry Blount to sign a multi-jurisdictional Pre-Disaster Mitigation plan that states the City’s support for Sumter County’s request for a FEMA grant.
• Results of the evaluation of the 2010 Council’s retreat were presented.
• Doris King was appointed Honorary Councilmember for February by Councilmember Juanita Wilson.
