AMERICUS —
Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) holds its Fall 2011 Commencement ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 in Convocation Hall of the GSW Student Success Center. Anthony S. Tricoli, president of Georgia Perimeter College (GPC) in Atlanta, is the commencement speaker. Having nearly 27,000 students, GPC is the third largest college or university in the University System of Georgia.
With 398 students expected to graduate, ample space for guests is limited. To compensate, GSW is providing each graduate with six tickets to disburse among family and friends. Limited overflow seating will be available, as well.
In the last four years, Tricoli and GSW President Kendall Blanchard have developed a strong relationship. As an outcome, a unique accelerated bachelor of business administration program was established allowing students to earn an associate's degree in business from GPC and a bachelor's degree from GSW in just three years. The first graduate of this program, Catherine Cospelich, is set to walk during commencement on Dec. 10.
"Dr. Tricoli is one of the most highly respected college presidents in the South," said Blanchard. "Without question, he is one of the most innovative and energetic leaders I have ever known. More importantly, he has proven to be a real friend of Georgia Southwestern."
"Georgia Perimeter College shares a strong connection with Georgia Southwestern," said Tricoli. "Georgia Perimeter's very first Transfer Admission Guarantee, which allows our students to transfer seamlessly to four-year institutions, was with Georgia Southwestern. And, in 2010, the institutions together established the state's first accelerated, three-year bachelor in business administration degree. I'm extremely honored to participate in the GSW commencement, particularly in this Fall 2011 ceremony, when the first graduate of that fast-track program is receiving her degree."
During commencement, John Stovall, Ph.D., GSW associate professor of marketing, will serve as the macebearer and Rebecca Short, assistant professor from the School of Education, will deliver the reflection. Greg M. Hawver, Ed.D., professor and department chair of Health and Human Performance, will be the grand marshal.
A graduation breakfast is planned for 8 a.m. in the Marshall Student Center Dining Hall.
