ELLAVILLE —
The Schley County Family Connection Collaborative and Farm Credit of Southwest Georgia teamed up to conduct the third annual Coat Drive for low-income kids in Schley County. Coats, scarves, blankets, hats, hoodies and sweaters were distributed to over 200 Schley County kids on Dec. 12 and 13 at the Mitchell Ellis Municipal Center in Ellaville.
“We had 217 children in Schley County sign up for coats this year, so it took us a little longer to acquire the quantity of coats needed,” said John T. Greene, Schley County Family Connection coordinator. “Three years ago, Stephanie Streetman, Farm Credit of Southwest Georgia, came to me with the idea of sponsoring a coat drive in Schley County,” Greene added. “This year, we had to actually purchase coats to make sure each child had one.”
Each child was allowed to get one coat and a sweater or hoodie.
One of our greatest supporters of this event during the past two years was the late Dr. Harold Holloway. Holloway would always purchase 100 gently used coats at the Salvation Army in Americus and have them cleaned and placed on hangers. This year, his children, Kathryn Lynn Land, Tina Michele Reddick and Jason Earl Holloway, contributed $300 from his estate to make this event possible.
Another great supporter of this year’s event is Coach Chuck Cheek and his students at Schley County High School. Cheek’s students contributed 113 coats, sweaters and hoodies for the event. They also contributed 11 scarves, five hats and one pair of gloves.
Polly Conger and the staff at Georgia Southwestern State University purchased 17 new coats from Belksand Walmart and contributed six gently used coats.
Greene also thank edthe following sponsors for making this event possible: Dale Newsome and Misty Belcher of Salvation Army in Americus, Alex Hadley of “No Tears For Christmas” in Buena Vista, Stephanie Streetman of Farm Credit of Southwest Georgia, teachers and staff of Schley County Elementary School, the Rev. Jesse Carson, of The Church International, and all local churches and civic organizations.

The Home Run to be held in Jay Williams’ memory
Jay Williams, of Plains, was an outdoor type of guy, enjoying activities such as running and bicycling. He was also a spiritual man and enjoyed sharing his faith with others. When he died after a falling accident in June 2012, his friends really missed him. Two of those friends, Travis Kelly and Rebecca Ferguson, decided to carry out a race event that Williams had planned, to benefit the Methodist Youth Home in Americus.
