Sumter County Fire Department personnel were still on the scene late Sunday afternoon after a fire on R.W. Jones Road claimed a life.The victim was identified as Doris Ann Fields, 68, of R.W. Jones Road, Leslie, according to Deputy Coronor Buddy Wilbanks. He said Fields was "dead at the scene" of the fire and her body was transported to the State Crime Lab. Another victim was airlifted to a Macon hospital, but no further information was available Sunday.
Fire Chief John Ekaitis said the call came at 1:45 p.m. to the single-family dwelling in rural southern Sumter County, near the Lee County line. He said six units and 31 firefighters battled the fire at the home which was "fully involved" upon their arrival. Ekaitis said mutual aid came from the Lee County Fire Department. The Sumter County Sheriff's Office and Vital Care also responded, he said.These firefighters did a good job, although it was a total loss," he said.
Ekaitis said that the Georgia Fire Marshal was en route to the scene, at around 4:30 p.m.
