AMERICUS —
There is still time to show off your greens cooking skills in the first ever Collards & Cornbread Cook-Off this Saturday. Registration is open until noon Friday, Jan. 25.
The Americus Times-Recorder and the Americus Rotary Club are sponsoring the cook-off, which will be held Saturday, Jan. 26 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lenny’s Market in downtown Americus. Proceeds from the event benefit the Rotary Club’s scholarship program for local students.
The contest is open to amateur and professional cooks. Judging begins at 1 p.m. Greens will be judged based on color, texture, seasoning, aroma and overall taste.
Judges for the event include David Finley, instructor of Culinary Arts at South Georgia Technical College, Gladys Jones from Gladys Kitchen, and Michelle Bush from Sumter County Schools.
Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children under 10. The admission fee includes a sample of greens from each booth and one vote for the People’s Choice Award. Additional People’s Choice votes can be purchased 2 for $1.
Cornbread and desserts will be available for those who might not enjoy the unique taste of the collard green.
Cook-off T-shirts are available for $15 each while supplies last.
The schedule for the day is as follows:11 a.m. Market begins
12 noon Live music
1 p.m. Collards judging/tasting begins
2 p.m. Judging ends
2:30 p.m. Collards Cook-Off winners announced
4 p.m. Market closes
The entry fee for cooks is $25 for amateurs and $50 for professional. The winner in the professional division will receive the official 2013 Collards Cook-Off Champ plaque and bragging rights for his or her restaurant. The winner of the amateur division will win a $100 gift certificate.
Set-up will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday. Contestants may begin cooking on site at that time or they can cook their food off-site. Booths must be ready by 9:30 a.m.
