Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall to stop in Sumter

AMERICUS — Andersonville National Historic Site Superintendent Brad Bennett made an appearance at the Sumter County Board of Commissioners’ regular meeting to discuss the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall that will be on display at the historic site in September. Bennett told the Board  that the traveling memorial is expected to bring a lot of people into Sumter County and Americus. The event will kick off Sept. 15 with a convocation at Georgia Southwestern State University. Lasting through Sept. 25, there will be other events held in association with the memorial including an opening ceremony on Sept. 17, a prisoner of war recognition ceremony on Sept. 18, a 5K “Run to the Wall” on Sept. 25 and other events interspersed throughout the nine-day period. Bennett also told the  Board that the National Historic Site is looking for volunteers to help look up names, help visitors make rubbings of names etched in the wall and to help with parking. “We expect more people in this nine-day period than any other time in the 40-year history of the park,” Bennett said. On Wednesday the Board voted to approve a construction management services contract with Rosser International Inc. Rosser is the company that is currently working on several SPLOST (special purpose local option sales tax) projects including the Human Services building at the former Tog Shop location to include the Health Department and the Department of Family and Children Services. The contract will contain a reduction of costs between $136,000 and $140,000  and insures that Sam Smith, a general contractor with Rosser, will be designated as the full-time manager of the projects in Sumter County. Efforts were made by Rosser and the Board to agree on creating a contract that was not “job specific” due to the many interrelated projects that are underway. The actual contract document and finalization of details will be presented at the September meeting of the Board of Commissioners. The Board voted to approve changes to the service delivery strategy for fire protection services in the county and to approve a resolution authorizing revision of the Sumter County service delivery strategy fire protection in the 27th voting district. Other items approved by the Board of Commissioners Wednesday are:

• Approval of the third amendment of the intergovernmental agreement made between the Secretary of the State of Georgia and Sumter County.

• Approval of Sumter County Fire Chief Joe Pollock as Sumter County EMA director.

• Approval of a request to fill a position in the Parks and Recreation Department of a part-time desk clerk.

• Approval of the request to fill the vacant position of a deputy at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
