AMERICUS — An aviation hangar at the Souther Field Airport in Americus will be dedicated in honor of the late Thomas K. Lloyd, long-time aviation instructor and chair of the South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) aviation department. The dedication of the Thomas K. Lloyd Hangar is scheduled for 10 a.m. Aug. 12 at the Souther Field Airport in Americus.
Lloyd, who was killed in a two-vehicle accident on Oct. 24, 2008, was an integral member of the aviation community for a large number of years.
He graduated from SGTC with an aviation degree Dec. 18, 1975. He returned to work for SGTC as an instructor in 1983. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had worked as a charter pilot and mechanic for Roddey Aviation in Americus and as a flight line mechanic at Eastern Airlines He also worked with Souther Field Aviation in Americus as a charter pilot and line mechanic. He was a 1979 graduate of Georgia Southwestern College (GSW) with a bachelor of science in psychology. He received his master of science degree in social administration from GSW in 2003.
An endowed scholarship in honor and in memory of Tom Lloyd has been established at SGTC by the Lloyd family along with friends in the aviation community, former students, and faculty and staff at SGTC.
