Smithville —
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation into the death of a Smithville woman over the weekend.
According to WALB-TV in Albany, 45-year-old Yvonne Wilson Burney was found dead outside her home Saturday morning. The cause of death is unknown.
The WALB report said that the woman’s 9-year-old daughter, Kirsten Burney, awakened on Saturday morning to go the bathroom and went looking for her mother. The child went outside and found her mother’s body lying face down on the ground next to the steps behind their home. When the girl couldn’t get a response from her mother, she went back inside and called for help, the report says.
According to that report, the woman’s family said Burney was not suffering from any illness.
Officer Sammy Stone of the Smithville Police Department was quoted as saying, "Anything out of the ordinary, anything that possibly could help us, if there is any foul play or anything, anything that could help us, that is what we were looking for.”
Burney's body was taken to the crime lab in Macon for autopsy.
Anyone with information about Burney's death,is asked to call the GBI or the Smithville Police Department.
Barnum Funeral Home in Americus is in charge of funeral arrangements, which have not yet been announced.
