AMERICUS —
Georgia Southwestern State University hosts its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation at 11 a.m. Jan. 16 in Convocation Hall of the Student Success Center. Karla Heath-Sands of WALB-TV in Albany is the keynote speaker.
Originally from Brunswick, Heath-Sands started her career in 1989, at WMAZ-TV in Macon as a weathercaster and community service director. She came to WALB in 1997, and anchors Newscenter 10’s noon news and co-hosts “Today in Georgia.” She also hosts WALB's public affairs program, “Dialogue.”
She graduated from Mercer University with an English degree. She has been a participant in the Miss America Pageant system placing fourth runner-up in the 1982 Miss Georgia Pageant as Miss Macon. She placed second in 1985 as Miss Brunswick-Golden Isles.
The event is sponsored by the MLK Convocation Committee, SABU alumni and friends and the Americus-Sumter County Movement Remembered Committee.
