AMERICUS —
Sumter County Schools Superintendent Roy Brooks, Ed.D., constantly reminds at all assembly meetings that school attendance is critical to reach his goal of "becoming one of the highest-achieving rural schools districts in Georgia."
On the final day of the 2011 calendar year, Coach Jimmy Green, School Attendance officer for Sumter County Schools, delivered a 97 percent attendance report, some 10 points better than the same time one year previous. Additionally, Green also shared trend attendance numbers. For Cherokee Elementary School, Sumter County Elementary School, Sumter County Middle School, and Staley Middle School , the average was 97%. Sumter County Primary, Americus-Sumter North Campus and Americus-Sumter South Campus reported a 96 percent attendance for latest report. Sarah Cobb Elementary School topped the attendance report with a 98 percent report.
Since the introduction of compilation of attendance records in 2006, the district average is 96 percent for all schools.
"We are not yet where I would like for us to be. Sarah Cobb Elementary attendance was 98 percent for this reporting period. With additional emphasis on the importance of school attendance and this partnership with parents, school officials and law enforcement of Sumter County, we will enjoy even better numbers in the future. Without the constant help of school administrators we could not post such good numbers," said Green.

Ru Story-Huffman named dean of GSW’s James Earl Carter Library
Ru Story-Huffman, interim dean of the James Earl Carter Library at Georgia Southwestern State University, was officially named dean. Prior to her role as interim dean, Story-Huffman served as reference librarian and government information coordinator at the Carter Library. She succeeds Vera Weisskopf who retired in March 2012.
