AMERICUS —
Phoebe Sumter Medical Center CEO Keith Petersen reported Tuesday at the governing Board’s monthly meeting that the hospital construction project is $3.3 million under budget as compared to original budget figures.
Petersen said he met with Roman Bucker of KLMK Group to discuss the final budget report. When the project is completed the amount of savings may increase slightly depending on fees and services to PricewaterhouseCoopers for consultation with the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) and consultative services related to the temporary hospital. Concerning the temporary hospital, Petersen reported that a meeting was held with state and federal emergency management officials regarding its disposition and determination is expected within the next month and a half.
Petersen reported to the Authority that the administration is working with physicians Jeremy Joyner and Sean Sheff in developing a bariatric surgery program. He said both are trained in bariatric surgery and are interested in focusing the program on gastric bypass surgery. Petersen shared two recent news stories, one from the New York Times and one from the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio that illustrate that weight loss operations may be more effective than standard treatments for Type 3 diabetes. Sheff and Joyner will be on hand at May’s Board meeting to give a presentation about the program.
Petersen reported that recruitment efforts are underway for a second orthopedist to join Dr. John Fennessy’s practice. In addition, the hospital administration is assessing the need for a fourth obstetrician/gynecologist and an internal medicine specialist in the Americus-Sumter County area.
Tuesday the Phoebe Sumter Hospital Authority voted unanimously to approve the following items.
• An annual evaluation of EOC management plans: safety, utilities, hazardous materials and waste, security, fire safety and medical equipment.
• An organizational quality plan updated for 2012.
