GSW School of Nursing creates Guaranteed Acceptance Program for top high school students

AMERICUS — Fresh on the heels of its online master of science in nursing degree approval, the Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) School of Nursing has established an innovative Guaranteed Acceptance Program (GAP) beginning fall 2012.

The program will allow a select number of exceptional students to obtain acceptance to the School of Nursing before graduating from high school. Selection for GAP students will be based on high school GPA, SAT/ACT scores, two references, and a one page personal statement essay. An entrance interview may also be required.

"Admission to nursing programs is very competitive and most are unable to admit all qualified applicants," said Sandra Daniel, Ph.D., dean of the School of Nursing. "Students who are accepted into the GAP program will have the assurance, from the moment they are admitted as freshmen, of full acceptance to the nursing program if all admission criteria are satisfactorily met. They will not have to apply to multiple nursing programs or worry about being waitlisted for admission. This program will also benefit from the ability to recruit and retain highly qualified students."

The GAP deadline for consideration is April 1. Once admitted to Georgia Southwestern, GAP students must complete all pre-nursing core classes, be enrolled as full-time students, and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.8 before beginning courses within the nursing program.

"As one of the most successful nursing programs in the state, it is inevitable that competition will be fierce for applicants," said Gaye Hayes, Ph.D., vice president of Enrollment Management. "GAP will give high-ability students the confirmation that if they successfully follow the plan laid for them, they will be guaranteed entrance into their desired curriculum. Once again, Southwestern faculty have found a way to ease the fears of incoming students and show that personal attention is not just lip service at GSW."

Students admitted to Georgia Southwestern as beginning freshmen who do not meet GAP requirements or who are denied admission to the program will still be listed as pre-nursing majors and can apply to the School of Nursing during their sophomore year. GAP students planning to take transient courses must have courses pre-approved by GSW's School of Nursing faculty. Students enrolled in the program may also be eligible for specific nursing scholarships.
