AMERICUS — The Sumter County Parks and Recreation Department (SCPRD) is continuing its championship-caliber play and service to the youth of Sumter County. This past weekend at The Columns at Boone Park, SCPRD played host to the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) District basketball championships.
The SCPRD All-Star teams went two for two at home and won their respective district crowns. The 10 and under Mite boys team defeated Crisp County 54-25 to advance to the state championship in Carrollton on Friday where they will face off against Habersham County in the opening game.
The eight and under Flea boys team won their district title by defeating Mitchell County 29-5 to advance to the state round in Chatsworth where they will square off against Calhoun County. The game holds a bit of history for the team as Calhoun was the same team to beat the eight and under boys in the state semifinals in football.
The 12 and under Midget league boys lost their final game 60-52 against Tift County on Saturday, as did the 12 and under girls who lost in the finals 34-27 against Tift County. The 10 and under girls team also lost 30-16 against Mitchell County.
“The upside is that all five teams that we had in contention,” said Darius Harris, athletic manager at SCPRD. “We are very proud of all of our teams and could not have asked for a better season.”
This year was the first season that SCPRD was able to play at the new Columns at Boone Park, and it was a season in which everyone came out and supported the teams. “All of our games here were standing room only,” said Harris. “We are appreciative of everyone who came out to support these kids.”
So far in this season of events at SCPRD, the department had two district champions and a state championship in football, two district champions in basketball, five district champion teams in soccer, four state champions in track, and the newly formed gymnastics team placed third in its first event as a team.
