The Sumter County Humane Society (SCHS) is teaming up with Café Campesino for a fundraising event that promises to be an exciting day for dogs and their loving owners. “CapPOOCHino Day” will be held at the local fair trade organic coffee roaster and café on Sept. 11. It is an event designed for dog owners to bring their furry friends and have them washed for a small fee. The funds raised from the dog wash will go to the Sumter Humane Society. Suggested donations for washing small dogs is $10, $15 for medium or large dogs and $5 for a nail trim.
The event, which will take place from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., will also give owners a chance to show off their beloved pets by entering them into the “Dog Show.” The dogs will be judged in different categories including the best dog and owner look alike, most unique mutt, prettiest pup, biggest dog and tiniest dog. And a “retriever raffle” will be held for baskets of “goodies” for dogs and their owners including pet beds, toys and gift certificates from local businesses. To coincide with the event Café Campesino will donate 10 percent of its sales on Saturday, Sept. 11 to the Humane Society.
The coordinator of “CapPOOCHino Day” is Café Campesino assistant manager Rebecca Young, who also serves on the SCHS Board. Young is excited about the opportunity to organize an event for a cause that she is passionate about. “We are trying to do something a little different to raise some money and have fun at the same time,” Young said. She says that she has always tried to be involved and has adopted pets from the SCHS. Her dog Nina, a German shepherd that was adopted from the SCHS in 2009, will be the retriever in the “retriever raffle.” Nina will pick the raffle winners by retrieving tennis balls marked with numbers corresponding with the raffle tickets. The tickets are on sale now for $1 each at area veterinary offices, Farmers Seed and Feed, the SCHS and Café Campesino.
Young says that through Aug. 21, the Humane Society will be taking donations of pet shampoo, baby shampoo and tennis balls, which can be dropped off at Café Campesino, 725 Spring St. or at the SCHS at 108 Industrial Blvd.
On “CapPOOCHino Day” the SCHS will have animals on site, available for adoption. All dogs must be on a leash, friendly, up to date on all vaccinations and parasite free. No aggressive dogs and no female dogs in heat are allowed. Owners must clean up after their own dogs and are responsible for their own pet’s behavior. For more information call 924-4094.
