AMERICUS —
Less than a week following the double shooting outside an Americus nightclub, a suspect was taken into custody. One of his victims died while the other is recovering,
Braxton Bernard Brown, 18, of a Leslie address, remains behind bars in the Sumter County Jail after being taken into custody late Thursday afternoon.
Authorities with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Region III Americus Office, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, the Americus Police Department and the US. Marshal Service converged on a residence at 522 E. Furlow St., Americus, where Brown was located in the company of several other individuals.
Danny Jackson, special agent in charge of the GBI Region III Office, said that Brown was taken into custody “without incident” just before 4 p.m. Thursday.
Jackson said the investigation had revealed some information which led investigators to that residence on East Furlow. Jackson said some of the other individuals on site were charged with drug offenses. He said a weapon was recovered at the residence but would not comment on whether it was the same weapon used in the shootings. According to the Sumter Sheriff’s Office, narcotics and cash were also seized.
“It’s still under investigation,” Jackson said. “The arrest is the result of a lot of good work on a lot of people’s part.”
The shootings occurred around 3:45 a.m. Sunday, July 29, outside the Astro Club at 153 Sunset Park in Sumter County. Jackson said the club was “technically closed” at the time of the shootings.
The gunman shot two men, each one once, according to Jackson. Klinen Carswell, 20, will survive; however, Richard Willis, 25, died Monday morning at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany.
“There appears to have been some type of an argument prior to the shootings,” according to Jackson, who said his agency was called in to assist at the request of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
It was confirmed Monday afternoon that Willis had been a former student at South Georgia Technical College (SGTC). The release said that Willis was a former early childhood care and education student and had an Elm Avenue, Americus address. He enrolled at SGTC in January 2010, and attended through spring 2012. He attended Georgia Perimeter College prior to attending South Georgia Technical College, and was a 2005 graduate of Mount Zion High School in Jonesboro.
SGTC officials made arrangements for on-campus counseling services to be available to the early childhood care and education students and other SGTC students, faculty and staff who were affected by the loss.
Braxton Brown is charged with felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, failure to appear in court and simple battery.
According to the Times-Recorder archives, Brown was charged with battery in May 2012, and jailed, and was charged with obstruction of law enforcement officers in September 2011, and jailed.
