AMERICUS —
South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) aviation students recently visited Pratt & Whitney’s new Columbus Engine Center, an engine overhaul facility at Pratt & Whitney’s large campus off Macon Road in east Columbus. The primary function of the facility is for repairs and overhauls on commercial airplane engines. It also has a forging plant that makes disks and air seals for commercial, military and business jets. A third facility, Precision Components International, manufactures engine blades and other parts. Pratt & Whitney Training and Development Coordinator Victor Morales led the group on the tour.
SGTC recently announced a co-op agreement with Pratt & Whitney which would allow SGTC aviation students to participate in a co-op program between the two institutions. Three SGTC students, James Jackson of Americus, Johnny Williams of Buena Vista and Cory Jackson of Leesburg, were selected as the inaugural co-op students for the program. The students worked at the Pratt & Whitney complex in Columbus this quarter priding disassembly, assembly, testing cells and non-destructive testing on the V2500 and F117 engines that are installed in the Air Force Boeing and C-17 military aircrafts. Pratt & Whitney will take on another group of co-op students in July.
Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, space propulsion systems and industrial gas turbines. It is also a subsidiary of the Hartford, Conn., based United Technologies Corp., which owns heating and air equipment manufacturer Carrier, helicopter firm Sirkorsky, and Otis Elevator. It operates fire and security companies as well.
