ELLAVILLE — It appears as if Schley County will not have to pay fines or penalties for not having its audit report to the state in a timely manner, although the state may with hold grant monies, if the report is not turned in, said Schley County’s accountant Bill Krenson.
The Schley County audit report will get to the state Department of Audits, but has not by Sept. 30, as the County is looking to have the report ready by Oct. 15, Krenson said.
Krenson did said the with holding rule does not apply to sales tax, however.
“I don’t think there will be sanctions from the state,” Krenson said.
“We had to re-enter all the information from the beginning (of the budget year),” Krenson said. The County’s budget year runs from July 1-June 30.
Krenson explained the County changed accounting systems in the middle of the budget year in January.
After the change, the computer suffered a breakdown, and all the transactions were lost. The company that sold the County the software had gone out of business, so the County still had the data, but could not run the program.
“You have two systems (ledgers), and we’ve had to put them together,” Krenson said. “We got done with that a week ago.”
“We are working as hard as we can,” Krenson said. “There are a lot of details.”
County Administrator Doug Redmond said assuringly the County is working on the audit and hopes to get it turned in within the next couple of weeks.
He also said the County would not pay fines or penalties.
