GBI: Ellaville shooting currently being considered homicide
ELLAVILLE — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is treating Sunday’s shooting death as a “homicide at this time,” according to Assistant Special-Agent-In-Charge Trebor Randall with the Region III GBI Office in Americus.
Around 1 a.m. Sunday, Ellaville Police officers received a call from dispatch of shots fired in the area of 116 Murphy St., according to reports. The suspect had fled the scene of the shooting.
Ellaville Police Chief Mitchell Ellis said the victim was Lewis D. Walker III, 25, of 406 Cora Drive, Ellaville.
Randall said Walker was taken to Sumter Regional Hospital East, and Ellis confirmed that he died at the hospital as a result of his injuries.
There is a suspect in custody, Lucas Pina, 24, of Ellaville. As of Monday morning, he was still incarcerated at the Sumter County Jail.
Randall said the type of weapon used in the shooting has still not been determined.
“The shooting is still under investigation,” Randall said. “We are taking witness statements ... and we are trying to determine what happened.”
