Barbara Dawn Smith Reed: June 24, 2008

ROME — Barbara Dawn Smith Reed, 78, of 121 Rollingwood Circle, Rome, passed away Saturday morning, June 21, 2008, following a short ilness.

Mrs. Reed was born Feb. 4, 1930, in Ellavile, the daughter of the late John Oscar Smith and Mabel Taylor Smith.

Barbara was a graduate of Schley County High School and Mercer Univerity with a bachelor of science degree in biology and psychology. She was member of the Chi Omega sorority. She taught school for 35 years in the following schools: Taylor County Elementary, Schley County Schools, Department of Defense Schools (Landsthul and Worms, Germany), Westchester School (Decatur, Ga.), Seneca, S.C. Elementary School, Georgia School for the Deaf (Cave Spring), Thatch Elementary School (Jasper, Ala.), South Rome Elementary, Coosa Middle School, and Cave Spring Elementary and Middle School.

Barbara was a member of Transfiguration Episcopal Church where she served on the altar guild for 25 years. She was also a member of the Daughters of the King. She was active in the Northeast Alabama Rose Society, the Georgia Retired Teachers Association, the Rome-Floyd Retired Teachers Association and the Angela Thirkel Society. She volunteered for many years with the Good Neighbor Ministries, Meals on Wheels, the International Red Cross and the Friends of the Library.

Suvivors include her husband, James Otey Reed (Jim), Rome; one son, John Otey Reed, Savannah; brother-in-law, Alexander Reed (Joan), Spring, Texas; sister-in-law, Llewellyn Reed, Ridgeville, S.C.; nieces, Carlene M. Boyce (Rick), Ann M. Brannan (Ronnie), Beverly E. Stevenson, Vicki R. Hammill (Jack), Ellen R. Segers (Darren); nephews, Cecil Howard (Genia), Mark L. Reed, and cousin Midge S. Williams. She is also survived by close friends, Thomas Jeanquart and Bridget Lidy, Savannah, and her beloved Westie, Fletchie. In addition to her parents, Barbara was pre-deceased by her four sisters, Willie, Ernestine, Kate, Gladys and their husbands.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at Transfiguration Episcopal Church. 304 Coker Drive, with the Rev. Canon Michael Owens officiating. Interment wil be in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today ay Daniel’s Funeral Home, Rome, and at the residence at other hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to one of the following: Rome-Floyd Humane Society, 518 Broad St., Rome GA 30161; Friends of the Library, 205 Riverside Parkway, NE, Rome GA 30161 or Transfiguration Episcopal Church. 304 Coker Drive, Rome GA 30165.
