Qualifying continues for Independent, nonpartisan candidates

AMERICUS — While there has been qualifying of Independent and nonpartisan candidates, no one qualified locally Tuesday.

As of Tuesday afternoon, no one had qualified for the five nonpartisan seats on the Sumter County Board of Education, or the chair of Sumter County State Court Judge, the position currently held by Americus attorney Russ Barnes, said Sumter County Elections Superintendent Sherry Ratliff.

She also said that there is not a lot of interest in qualifying as an Independent candidate.

“Usually, people are calling to ask about qualifying,” Ratliff said.

As of late Tuesday afternoon, no one had qualified to run on the Independent ticket for District Attorney or Southwestern Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge. Incumbent Judge Rucker Smith and Albany attorney Jimmie Brown qualified for the judge’s seat on Monday.

Also, no one has qualified to run Independent against local state senators or representatives.

Qualifying as an Independent or nonpartisan candidate runs through Friday.
