AMERICUS — Thomas Wolfe once wrote, “There is no spectacle on earth more appealing than that of a woman in the act of cooking dinner for someone she loves.”
In today’s modern society, where more men are tying aprons on than women, this writer believes that Wolfe’s quote should be changed to read, “There is no spectacle on earth more appealing than that of anyone in the act of cooking dinner for a loved one.”
A lot of you agree. In fact, several local residents consider watching other people cook a hobby.
Stephanie Cash, a newcomer to the community, said, “Everyone cooks better than me, but if I had to pick someone’s cooking that I enjoyed the most, I would say, my husband’s mother, her Thanksgiving meals. I loved the dressing.”
Jimmy Ferguson pondered for a moment when asked to name his favorite cook, “ I would have to say my girlfriend, Jensen Dill.
“She makes spaghetti, and it tastes good,” said Ferguson, “and serves it was garlic toast.”
Jennifer Greene works late at night, “so sometimes when I come in, I will just fix a ham sandwich.
“I like to eat a variety of things,” she said. “I really like to eat at this Chinese restaurant. The sauce and steak and rice is good.”
Tiffany Smith said that her “real good friend, Willie Chambers, can cook up a storm.
“He can grill like none other,” Smith remarked.
Chisa Cowan, a native of Thomasville, Ala., working in the community said, “I really like Paula Deen’s cooking. She does this southern fried chicken, Cowan licks her lips, “that is just out of this world. It is so golden and crispy.
“My mom made it for me and it was really good,” she said.
A cooking enthusiast herself, Cowan said, “I like to make spaghetti, except I use both beef and sausage and add mushrooms to the sauce.”
Carl Harrell didn’t even have to think about who he liked to watch cook. “Oh, my grandmother. She did it all, baked chicken, yams, greens. I am not a dish person, I like the whole meal.”
Grinning, Harrell said of his grandmother’s cooking, “It was scrumptious.”
