PLAINS — What is Junior Ranger Day? Each park within the National Park Service system sets aside one day during the year, some during National Parks Week, to celebrate Junior Rangers. The first National Junior Ranger Day was held in 2007, but they have been occurring in parks across the country for many years. Junior Ranger Day provides families with the opportunity to experience the different areas and career opportunities in the parks, and to get to know the people who make the parks possible.
Come and join the staff of the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site in celebrating Junior Ranger Day on June 13. There will also be a scavenger hunt in Plains and at the Boyhood Farm, to encourage children to learn more about our 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter. Demonstrations will be performed by park rangers in “period dress” at the Boyhood Farm.
This event is being held in conjunction with the SAM Shortline Excursion Train. For those children that will be on the train, there will be a uniformed Park Ranger aboard to answer any questions during this special day. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to the site to participate in this special day also. They will be able to pick up the scavenger hunt/ activity sheet starting at 11: 30 a.m. at the Plains High School Visitor Center front desk. Upon completion of the scavenger hunt/activity sheet, children will receive a special Junior Ranger patch, a Jimmy Carter National Historic Site Junior Ranger badge and other prizes and surprises.
