PLAINS — The city of Plains is full of history, and being the home of the 39th President of the United States is a good place to start. Some teachers from different schools in Sumter County are finding out that Plains offers more than “Mr. Jimmy” (Carter).
Over the past week teachers from Sumter County have been roaming the streets of Plains taking photos of the local scenery, historic markers and treasures that the city has to offer. The teachers are taking part in a workshop put on by Annette Wise, who is the teacher on staff at Plains High School at the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site.
The workshop focuses on what Wise called “digital storytelling” which incorporates different methods of teaching and approaching the subjects that the teachers cover in their classrooms.
Cindy Williams, who is a teacher at Southland Academy, said, “We are taking what we learned about Plains and Jimmy Carter, and transferring that into the classroom.” The teachers are also getting a re-education about the city of Plains, with some finding out things they never knew. “I have lived in Plains for 36 years and I am finding out so many things that I never knew,” said Williams.
The group toured Plains High School, where they listened to a presentation from Michael Mallard, whose grandfather Y.T. Sheppard was the principal when Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter were students.
The workshop also allows teachers to receive three learning points toward their re-certification. “This workshop is a great thing because it shows teachers new ways to go about teaching their curriculum,” said Wise.
