Hit and run leads to arrest

AMERICUS — At approximately 10:47 p.m. Saturday, Sumter County Sheriff’s deputies responded to Tower View Road in reference to a traffic accident, according to sheriff’s reports. The accident led to the arrest of Eugene Hicks, 52, of 125 Lexington Circle, Americus.

The reports stated that Hicks was traveling south on Arlington Drive when he swerved into the opposite lane, striking a vehicle driven by Tonia R. Pace. Pace told the reporting officer, Deputy Sam Barragan, that Hicks continued traveling south after the collision before turning left onto Tower View Road. Pace complained of injury and was taken to Sumter Regional Hospital by Vital Care.

A witness informed Barragan that Hicks drove recklessly down Tower View Road before stopping, getting out of his 1996 Mazda 626DX and walking towards Lexington Circle, per the report. Barragan stated that the witness believed Hicks was under the influence of alcohol due to the fact he could not walk straight and stumbled.

Barragan made contact with the owner of the vehicle Hicks was driving. The owner, Hicks’ wife, stated that he should not have been driving because he had no driver’s license and had been drinking.

According to the report, Barragan made contact with Hicks on Lexington Circle. Hicks told Barragan that he had been drinking and driving earlier in the day and he had left the car on Tower View Road after being struck by a car on Arlington Drive.

Hicks was then arrested and charged with DUI, driving while license is suspended, failure to report an accident with injuries, hit and run and failure to maintain lane. He was jailed.
