Wise Sanitarium marker dedicated

AMERICUS — Built in 1821 by Drs. Samuel, Thaddeus and Bowman Wise, sons of Dr. Burr T. and Laura Addy Wise who were early settlers of Plains, the Wise Sanitarium was known as the “Mayo Clinic of the South.”

A marker, funded by the Plains Historical Preservation Trust was dedicated in honor of the site on Oct. 3.

The ceremony began with Annette Wise making opening remarks. Michael Mallard gave recognition of the Lillian Carter Nursing Center, and state Rep. Mike Cheokas, D-Americus, made remarks. The marker unveiling and reading was done by Edwin Timmerman, who was followed by former President Jimmy Carter, and closing remarks were given by Allene Haugabook.

Descendants of the Wise doctors were introduced and shared comments of their heritage as well, and then there was a meal served.
