Club notes: Oct. 28, 2009
AMERICUS — Green Club Grand Gardeners
The Green Thumb Grand Gardeners Club held its first meeting of the garden club year on Sept. 11 in the parlor at First United Methodist Church. The meeting was hosted by Margaret Hawkins and Norma Wall.
Hawkins also presented the program, which was a video of the garden where the Tarzan movie series, played by Johnny Weismiller was filmed. Titled “The Wonders of Wakulla Springs,” the garden is located 20 miles from Tallahassee, Fla.
Group Leader Lib Willoughby welcomed the members and presided. Martha Ann Studstill gave the devotional, citing memories of the fateful “9-11.”
Willoughby reminded members that items for the Garden Club of Georgia’s Fig Leaf Project are due at the October meeting, which is hosted by Jean Carswell and Lutrell Perry. She also reported that $25 has been donated to the GCG Roadside Beautification Project. Orders were taken for GCG Calendars a state garden club project which raises funds for scholarships.
Betty Jones gave “Now is the Time,” which are seasonal gardening tasks and tips. Get well cards were sent to absent members: Liz Turpin, the club’s treasurer, to Kay Ansley and to Pam Law.
Present were Carswell, Hawkins, Jones, Lillian Lopez, Mae Stanford, Studstill and Willoughby.
Martha Montgomery was a guest of the club and she also won the door prize.
Sumter Federation of Garden Clubs
The Sumter Federation of Garden Clubs held its bi-monthly meeting Sept. 22 at the Sumter Agriculture Center on with Iris Garden Club as hostess.
The Federation is made up of Azalea, Dogwood, Glendale, Town and Country, Iris, and Early Bloomers clubs. All the clubs were represented at the meeting.
Meeting was called to order by Faye Frazier; devotional was given by Terry Goodrum; minutes werre read by Janice Cliett, secretary, and treasurer's report was given by Willie Maxwell. New members were recognized and introduced.
Frazier reported that our City parks and cemetery look very nice and green after lots of work and nice rain and weather.
Plans for annual plant sale were made for early spring. Committees and all other information will be announced in next meeting.
Plans are being made for Basis Floral Design II as Design I was completed last year.
Program was given by Bill Starr, Sumter County Extension agent who presented film on annual and perennels, telling what plants do best in this section of the country. His lecture consisted of best times to plant, when to water, fertilize, spray for insects, best methods to keep grass and weeds from harming plants, cutting off old foliage, destroying old plants when life span is over, preparing soil and drainage, and best time to divide plants and bulbs. He answered many questions and his film and lecture were very useful and informative to us all.
Next meeting is Nov. 24.

Sumter YDC to hold graduation
Sumter Youth Development Campus to hold graduation: One student at the Sumter Youth Development Campus (YDC) will receive his high school diploma, 11 will graduate with their equivalency degrees (GEDs) and two students will receive technical certificates from South Georgia Technical College at a graduation ceremony at 10 a.m. today at the YDC facility.

BOC to hold special called meeting today
The Sumter County Board of Commissioners has a special called meeting at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Board of Commissioners’ Board Room to discuss the approval of any contracts with any municipalities that have elected to contract with the Sumter County Board of Commissioners for providing fire and emergency services.
