AMERICUS — James Miller of Americus has joined the staff of South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) as the library assistant for the Americus campus. Miller has been working as a librarian for the past four years, serving as a reference and training librarian at Atlee Branch Public Library in Mechanicsville, Va., and as a library assistant at Glen Allen Public Library in Richmond, Va.
As a reference and training librarian, Miller served on a technology team to maintain hardware and software, provided general reference service, and developed career transition class for job-seekers.
As library assistant at Glen Allen Public Library, he served as a technology expert for the branch, transitioning new hardware and software, creating curriculum for technology classes for the public and coordinating Interlibrary loan service.
Miller also previously served as a case assistant at Bowman and Brooke LLC, a law firm in Richmond, Va., where he assisted in all phases of case preparation, including discovery and trial. In addition to his library and law firm experience, Miller also served as an intern staff writer at the Plano Star Courier in Plano, Texas.
Miller has been a member in both the Virginia Library Association and the American Library Association since 2006, and was a County of Henrico Excellence in Public Service Award nominee.
Miller earned a bachelor of arts in English from Austin College in Sherman, Texas, and a master of science in library and information science from Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pa.
Miller and his wife Andrea, who is a professor of psychology at Georgia Southwestern State University, recently moved to the area from Richmond, Va. Miller says he is adjusting to small-town life and enjoys the slower pace. “I am happy to be here at South Georgia Tech,” said Miller, “and I hope to learn a lot and contribute to the school’s mission.”
