Wilson sworn in to City Council

AMERICUS — Americus Mayor Barry Blount and City Council met Monday for an administrative briefing. Juanita Wilson was sworn in as council member for District 1 after her victory in the special election held Nov. 3.

The council voted to extend water lines on the southern side of U.S. Highway 280 West 800 feet from Perry Brothers Oil Co. at a cost of $5,950. In other business the council discussed dates, location and topics for the annual retreat slated for January.

Statesboro was discussed as a possible retreat location and some of the topics the council plans to address will include strategic planning involving new economic opportunities, having new projects in line for when funding is available and nuisance and zoning ordinances.

Council member Charlotte Cotton also announced that the City has been chosen a stop on the 10th annual Heart and Soul tour in April 2010. The Heart and Soul Tour is a bus tour for members of the Georgia Municipal Association and Georgia Cities Foundation along with economic developers and community organizers, who will have the opportunity to meet with some City officials and visit the city.

In the coming weeks, on the council’s agenda will be the G.M.A. District meeting to be held Nov. 18 in Buena Vista and the City budget work session on Nov. 23.
