AMERICUS — South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) served as the host site for the Technical College System of Georgia three-day Faculty Development Institute recently. Approximately 20 instructors from technical colleges throughout Georgia participated in Phase II of the workshop which was held in the Betty Deriso Pope Teleconference Room in the John M. Pope Industrial Technology Center on the SGTC Americus campus.
Benita Moore from the Technical College System of Georgia coordinated the Faculty Development Institute. She and Robert Keown served as the instructors for the event. Adrienne Beach-Duncan and Deborah Jones from SGTC served as the local hosts for the event.
The Faculty Development Institute is designed to assist knowledgeable instructors in developing and delivering important classroom management skills, as well as learning information on teaching online classes, partial online and web enhanced classes. The participants also developed and delivered classroom and/or lab presentations for review and critique.
The technical college instructors also received Banner computer training, learned to incorporate performance objectives into lesson plans, and did role playing activities on case studies that involved classroom management issues and how to resolve the issues effectively.
SGTC instructors who participated in the training included James “Scooter” Alford Jr., commercial truck driving; Karen Bloodworth and Mary Cross, marketing management instructors; Brandon Dean, automotive technology; Phil Deese, industrial systems technology; Walter Dennard, barbering; Vicki Gilbert, medical assisting; James Halford, industrial electrical; Victoria Herron, aviation maintenance technology; Bryan Kelly, diesel equipment technology; Teresa McCook, criminal justice; Dorothea McKenzie, cosmetology; Brett Murray, Law Enforcement Academy; Starlyn Sampson, automotive collision repair technology, and Michele Seay, general education, psychology and sociology.
