SGTC honor society inducts new members

AMERICUS—The South Georgia Technical College chapter of the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) inducted 34 new members in a ceremony in the John M. Pope Industrial Technology Center on the Americus campus recently. Mrs. Carolyn Myers, South Georgia Tech’s NTHS Advisory, presided over the ceremony.

In order to receive this honor, students must be nominated by an instructor, be a full-time student at SGTC for at least two complete quarters, and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5.

The student must also demonstrate leadership abilities and display a commendable attitude, good mentality, worthy character, credible achievement, and a desire to pursue a career in the field of his or her technical study.

SGTC President Sparky Reeves welcomed friends, family members, faculty, and staff members who attended the ceremony. Reeves addressed the inductees by saying, “This honor means you’ve excelled. You’re the best of the best we have here, and congratulations to each of you.” Raymond Holt, Dean for Academic Affairs, recognized the students for their achievements and gave the invocation.

Carolyn Myers, NTHS Advisor and Medical Assisting instructor at SGTC, stated the purpose of the NTHS and followed with a candle lighting ceremony, assisted by three of the new inductees. Myers inducted the members, presenting them with certificates and pins, then led the new inductees through the pledge of membership.

New NTHS members are Sheila Akandu of Americus, Early Childhood Care and Education; Anthony Dale of Smithville, Welding and Joining Technology; Marsha Dantes of Montezuma, Business Administrative Technology; Lakesha Dorsey of Americus, Early Childhood Care and Education; Arthur Gibson of Leslie, Air Conditioning Technology; Steven Gibson of Buena Vista, Aviation Maintenance Technology; James Guy of Sycamore, Aviation Maintenance Technology; Tara Harris of Preston, Business Administrative Technology; Marlea Hawkins of Ellaville, Medical Assisting; Samuel Hill of Americus, Welding and Joining Technology; William Hollomon of Americus, Air Conditioning Technology; Jessica Jarriel of Ellaville, Drafting; Lois Kelly of Americus, Early Childhood Care and Education; Eric Kincaid of Oglethorpe, Air Conditioning Technology; Matthew Owsley of Americus, Avionics; Mary Beth Greene of Americus, Early Childhood Care and Education; Dawn Raines of Mauk, Avionics; Ellen Ratliff of Plains, Business Administrative Technology; Kelsey Ray of Richland, Early Childhood Care and Education; Kent Reagan of Oglethorpe, Computer Information Systems; Matthew Shell of Waycross, Aviation Maintenance Technology; Jimmy Smith of Cordele, Diesel Equipment Technology; Terri B. The Society has recognized outstanding student achievement in workforce education since 1984. Over 1,500 schools and colleges throughout the U.S. and its territories are affiliated with NTHS. Induction into NTHS is a benchmark—the highest award for excellence in the workforce education in America.
