AMERICUS — The report made by the Georgia High School Football Daily earlier on Monday saying that Mark Wilson is no longer the head coach at Americus-Sumter is false.

Sumter County Schools Superintendent Dennis McMahon, Ph.D., said he was shocked to learn of the news. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution had posted the article on its Web site from the daily newsletter.

“I can’t imagine getting a story wrong in that size of a paper,” said McMahon. “I’d be surprised if Mark would resign and not tell me about it. No decisions have been made about any of our coaches.”

Wilson said he learned of the article from an e-mail when he was selecting players for the All-Region Team. He said he was at a loss for words.

“I don’t know where they got it,” he said. “I talked with Dr. McMahon, and I know the program is being evaluated, and I will take his word. I didn’t know how to react to it.”

Wilson is 15-27 in four seasons at Americus-Sumter, with the Panthers finishing 4-6 this season. The school has played in 4A the past four seasons, but has been moved to 3A with the latest enrollment numbers.

McMahon said evaluation of all the fall coaches will be done over the next two months.

“He’s our athletics director, and we’re not making changes at this point. We will review it and make the best decisions for the program and our kids. Mark’s a tremendous person, and I think an awful lot of him as a person and as a coach. I feel bad for him because someone did something that wasn’t fair.”
