Heavy rain struck middle Georgia, toppling trees and causing streams to overflow, and three counties closed their schools.
Overnight, there were reports of several roads flooded, forcing authorities to close them, and there was at least one report of a tree that toppled onto the roof of a house. There was also a report of a tornado touching down in between Plains and Americus. As of 9 a.m. Tuesday, though, all Sumter County roads appear to be open.
Roads were hazardous in some areas, and schools were closed on Tuesday in Dodge, Treutlen and Wheeler counties. Teachers were told to report at 9 a.m. in Dodge County and 10 a.m. in Treutlen County.
The Telegraph newspaper in Macon reports that officials in Crisp County said more than a dozen roads were closed.
A flash flood watch was posted for an area stretching from Columbus to Houston County to south of Augusta.
Dooly County sheriff’s deputies said Monday night they had received reports of water over roads in some areas and were investigating several cases of cars hydroplaning because of water in roads.
