AMERICUS — Juniors and seniors from Webster County High School in Preston recently visited South Georgia Technical College in Americus to tour the campus and learn about some of the program offerings and opportunities at SGTC.
Don Smith, SGTC assistant to the president, gave the group an inspirational welcome, indicating that there is indeed something for everyone at SGTC.
According to Webster County High School Counselor Teresa Griffin, most of the juniors and seniors at Webster County High have taken SGTC’s placement test.
SGTC Director of Career Services Cynthia Carter encouraged the students to extend their education experiences beyond high school. “Most well-paying jobs require education beyond a high school diploma,” said Carter. “We are training students for jobs that do not yet exist. We teach creative problem-solving, basic technical skills, and how to be successful in the workforce.”
The students had the opportunity to take a look at some of SGTC’s most popular programs, including culinary arts with instructor David Finley, heavy equipment dealers service technology with instructor Rick Davis, cosmetology with instructor Dorothea McKenzie, drafting with instructor Chris Royal, and law enforcement academy with instructor Brett Murray and administrative assistant Sandy Alford.
Also assisting the students on the tour were Director of Financial Aid Michael Wright, Director of Admissions Whitney Crisp and Dean for Academic Affairs Raymond Holt.
The students wrapped up their visit with the on-campus dining experience in the Landings cafeteria, which lunch served by Aramark.
South Georgia Technical College is accepting applications for winter quarter.
Classes begin Jan. 7 and open registration will be held Jan. 5 and 6.
