Americus Walk of Fame honors inductees

AMERICUS — The City of Americus, for the sixth time, will honor some of its own citizens with the 2011 Walk of Fame ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Rylander Theatre, downtown.

This year’s inductees are Walter Rylander Sr., Eddie Rhea Walker, Charles Wheatley, Jeff Williams and Leroy Williams.

A brief ceremony will be held recognizing each inductee and their accomplishments and then a reception will follow on the Rylander stage. The public is invited.

These five inductees join a long line of celebrants previously recognized on the Walk of Fame, which is located on the sidewalk in front of the Rylander Theatre.

Some of them include Former Mayor and District Attorney J. Frank Myers; Luther Story, Sumter County’s only Congressional Medal of Honor recipient and a veteran of World War II; Roy Lee and Susan Smith, philanthropists; William B. King, Ph.D., president emeritus of GSW 1963-1978; Clarence Jordan, founder of Koinonia Farms, author of the Cotton Patch gospels; President Jimmy Carter; Rosalynn Carter; Judge Thomas O. Marshall, Chief Justice, Georgia Supreme Court; John and Betty Pope, philanthropists; Millard and Linda Fuller, founders of Habitat for Humanity International and the Fuller Center for Housing; former Mayor Russell Thomas Jr.; Henry King Stanford, president of the University of Miami and the University of Georgia; Iris Argo, first woman awarded a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia; the Rev. Pearly Brown, Georgia Music Hall of Fame musician; Niya Butts, University of Arizona women’s head basketball coach; Larry Comer, founder of Metalux Lighting and Caravelle Boats; Jimmy Hightower, head football coach at Americus High School and GSW; Thomas Kinnebrew, retired Vice Admiral of U.S. Navy and Distinguished Service Medal recipient; Johnny Sheffield, former Americus mayor and former lieutenant governor of Rotary; Rudy Hayes, former managing editor of the Americus Times-Recorder; the late Rev. Joseph R. Campbell, civil rights proponent; U.S. Congressman Charles Frederick Crisp, among others.
