MONTEZUMA —
The Allens Inc. plants in Montezuma are not closing, a company official has said in response to rumors.
“We’re not closing anything. Allens will continue to operate both of its frozen vegetable plants in Montezuma,” said James Phillips, vice president, corporate services.
Phillips said there will be a reduction in the work force at the repack facility and the plant will be restructured. Many of the affected employees will be offered employment opportunities at the fresh vegetable plant.
Allens’ representatives will meet with the employees to “make everything go as smoothly as we can,” Phillips said. “We appreciate the people who work in the Montezuma plant and their patience and faithfulness as we make the necessary changes.”
The Montezuma plant is important in the Allens operation, Phillips continued.
“We want our growers, suppliers and customers to know that we are committed to the frozen vegetable business in Montezuma, Ga.,” he said. “We must continue to focus on ways to operate more efficiently and remain the low-cost producer of the highest quality vegetables.”
As the plant grows, workers will be added, he said.
“There is opportunity for growth as Allens has customers seeking larger amounts of products. We have customers who want to buy more volume if we can get the facility in shape and produce it,” he said.
Phillips also wants growers to understand that “We’re committed to this area, and we want to work with the county, the city and the state” to grow Allens.
“We appreciate the things that have already been done in the community, and we especially appreciate the hard work of our employees and the loyalty of our customers,” he said.
