APD report reveals more about crash

AMERICUS — An traffic accident that occurred Wednesday afternoon on South Lee Street resulted in the principal vehicle crashing into an office building at 702 S. Lee St.

According the Americus Police Department (APD,) the 2001 Jeep Laredo driven by Russell M. Pugh of 447 Brady Road, Americus, was traveling north on Lee Street approaching East Hill Street when it suddenly “sped up to a speed well above the posted speed limit,” according to an APD police report. Pugh’s Jeep struck the rear of one vehicle, then scraped along the side of a third vehicle before leaving the roadway. According to the police report, the Jeep traveled around 218 feet through the yards of 724, 720, 710 and 706 S. Lee St. before striking the exterior wall of the office building of local attorney J. Michael Greene at 702 S. Lee St., and coming to rest partly inside the building. The Jeep also struck a boat and trailer that were parked in the driveway of 706 S. Lee St.

Passengers in the Jeep stated that Pugh suddenly slumped over to the driver door appearing to be asleep or unconscious prior to acceleration. The driver awoke after the vehicle’s impact with the building and stopped. Pugh and the back-seat passenger exited the vehicle. The front-seat passenger had to be extricated. Both passengers in the Jeep, Thomas J. Blasingame, 19, of 122 Jamine Drive, Americus and Tritt D. Hayes, 18, of 117 Aster Drive, Americus were treated for injuries. A juvenile in the Pontiac G6 was also treated at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center. According to the accident report, no charges have been filed.
