Chicken Pie Festival to hatch in Smithville

AMERICUS — The Smithville Recreation Club is gearing up for the annual Chicken Pie Festival to be held Oct. 30 in downtown Smithville. The festival kicks off at 7:30 a.m.. with a 10.2k run, 5k run and one mile fun run, all sponsored by Premiere Orthopedics of Albany. A Pet Parade will follow the races and will be held in front of the gazebo in downtown.

Visitors can expect plenty of food with chicken pie plates going on sale at 10 a.m. and other local food vendors selling a variety of festival-type fare, including nachos and turkey legs. There will be a chicken pie contest starting at 11 a.m. at the Recreation Club. There will also plenty of fun activities for children including pony rides, balloons, a jumping castle and wholesome entertainment for the entire family in the form of live country and gospel music. Arts and crafts vendors will be on site as well, featuring hand crafted jewelry and wood working.

The Recreation Club will also host the annual Blue Jean pageant Oct. 23 to kick off the week’s events.

This marks the third year that the Smithville Recreation Club will host the Chicken Pie Festival. According to Club Member Thomas Jackson, the group has kept the festival going to provide revenue to fund other community events, such as an annual Easter egg hunt, Christmas events and a fireworks show for the Fourth of July.

“It has been good for the community and people that come really do enjoy it,” Jackson said.

Jackson said that the festival has something new in store for this year. To coincide with the festival on Oct. 30, will be “Adopt a Pet” day. The Humane Societies from Sumter, Lee and Terrell counties will have pets on hand for adoption and will be featured in the pet parade.

Judging for the Chicken Pie Contest will begin at 11 a.m. at the Recreation Club. To enter your Chicken Pie in to the festival contest or to receive a vendor application, contact Thomas Jackson at 229-846-5584 for more information.
